How to Have a Junk Free Diet and Still Satisfy Your Junk Food Cravings - Health - Nutrition

Losing weight is something that can be a really difficult battle for many people. In fact, there are millions of people in the United States and millions more all over the world who are overweight and have been battling their weight for a number of years. A lot of people find that they go on diets, lose a few pounds, then go off the diets because they are craving junk food and do not like the restrictions of their diets. There are others who go on the latest fad diets and maybe lose a few pounds, but these pounds, and usually a few more, end up coming right back on. This makes many people even more discouraged and the battle of the bulge rages on, often throughout a person's entire lifetime.

Can You Eat Fun Food and Still Lose Weight?

One of the biggest problems for most dieters is not having enough willpower to overcome cravings for their favorite treats, such as French fries, hamburgers, pizza, chocolate, and potato chips, to name a few. Let's face it. We all love these things and even those of us who are a healthy weight are often guilty of binging on these treats now and again. In this fast paced world we live in, it is nearly impossible not to have junk food once in a while and actually, this is okay. The problems start when people start eating nothing but junk food and are not getting the proper nutrition. Not only does this lead to obesity, but a whole lot of other health problems, so it is essential that we all follow a junk free diet, or at least as close to one as possible.

As long as you are following a healthy diet for the most part, it is not so bad if you have junk food occasionally. You just need to stop making a habit out of it. When you are eating healthy, the good nutrition you are getting will more than compensate for the occasional junk food treat, and by having a diet that is not completely junk-free, you will be less inclined to go out and binge on treats and go off your diet altogether.

Making Healthy Food Seem Junky

If you would like to have a healthy diet, but still enjoy all of your favorite junk food treats, there are all kinds of ways that you can get creative in the kitchen and make healthy food seem junky. This way, you don't need to have a completely junk free diet, but you won't have all of the fat and calories which lead to obesity.

- Enjoy your French fries - If you are a French fry freak, you can actually cook them so that they are extremely healthy. Instead of buying frozen fries, or frying potatoes in oil, cut potatoes into fry shapes and bake them. You will be getting the delicious crunchy French fry taste you love, with all of the goodness of a baked potato. And if you leave the skins on, you will be getting even more nutrients.

- Don't give up chocolate - Many people think that they can't have chocolate on a healthy, junk free diet. This is not so. In fact, chocolate is very good for you and is loaded with anti-oxidants. Enjoy a little bit of chocolate every day, but make sure that you are getting dark chocolate, the darker the better, for the most nutritional value.

- Get all four food groups with pizza - Don't think you have to give up pizza when you are on a healthy diet. Pizza can be extremely healthy and when made right, contains all four food groups: cheese (dairy), meat, peppers, onions, tomatoes (vegetables), whole wheat pizza dough (wheat/bread). If you make your own pizza, you can add your own healthy ingredients and give your family a meal that you know is good for them and that they will love. And pizza is one of the healthiest non-conventional breakfasts you can have, and who doesn't like cold pizza for breakfast!

- Burgers for breakfast, too - Another non-traditional breakfast food is the hamburger. This can actually be cooked to be very healthy and can contain all four food groups. For example, if you grill the meat, which of course should be extra lean and put it on a whole grain bun, you have a healthy sandwich that is loaded with protein. Add lettuce, tomatoes, onions and cheese, and you have a complete, healthy meal that is great any time of the day.

- Sweet treats - If you like to have a piece of cake now and again, there is a way that you can make it so that it is nearly fat free. You can find many recipes that do not have eggs in them, or you can use egg substitutes. And where many cake recipes call for oil, you can substitute apple sauce, which will not change the flavor, but will make the cake a lot less fattening. If you use a sugar substitute, your cake will be ideal for all types of diets, whether it is a junk free diet or a diabetic diet that is extremely restricted.

These are just a few ways that you can have junk food, even in a junk free diet. There are all kinds of things that you can do to make meals your entire family will love, and they will never even know they are actually eating healthy food. You can find loads of delicious recipes in books and on the Internet, and there are even websites that offer healthy versions of your favorite takeout foods.
