How could you eat that junk? Its so bad for you! (nag, nag). Dont you know those fries will give you a heart attack? (nag, nag). You have to stop eating all that fast food, its going to make you fat! (nag nag). You have to eat more healthy food like fruits and vegetables - theyre good for you! (nag, nag). Your friends nag you, your family nags you, your doctor nags you, the health newsletters, websites and magazines - they all nag you, and of course, your personal trainer nags the heck out of you, to stop eating all those BAD FAST FOODS. But does all that nagging you and bad-mouthing the fast food industry really help anyone stop?

It doesnt look that way. The fast food industry is thriving, even in the bad economy. The Chicago Tribune recently said that McDonalds is recession proof.

As one of only two companies to turn a major profit over the last year (the other being Wal Mart), McDonalds is laughing its way to the bank. In fact, McDonalds plans to open 1,000 new stores this year.

I was driving down Route 95 a few weeks ago and pulled over to use the rest room at Mcdonalds on a Saturday morning (theres a McDonalds conveniently located immediately off almost every exit up and down the full length of Interstate 95).

The parking lot was full, it was standing-room only inside and the lines snaked around into the seating area! Youd think Brad and Angelina were there signing autographs or something. Nope. Just a regular weekend at breakfast-time.

I was shopping in Wal Mart the same week and I almost passed out when I saw (smelled, actually) a McDonalds INSIDE THE WAL- MART! Also, with lines.

Yep. It looks like your friends and familys nagging you to stop eating fast food, and all the messages of the health and fitness industry to get people eating more health food are not working!

So what does work?

The results of a new survey from the behavior and psychology section of the journal, OBESITY (Feb 2009) provide some answers:

Researchers at the University of Minnesota School of Public health surveyed 530 adults about their attitudes towards fast foods.

They found that people already know fast food is unhealthy. (like, no kidding!)

The primary reasons they eat it anyway are because of the perceived convenience and a dislike for cooking! (Id add another: they think fast food is always cheaper than healthy food).So, said the authors of this research paper, nagging people to eat more healthy food and warning them that fast food is going to make us fat and kill us is not the best approach.

Whats the right approach?

Focus on teaching people how to make healthy eating fast, convenient and easy, because those are the reasons people are choosing fast food in the first place.

So whats holding us back from implementing or taking this advice?Well, I think that most people cant get over the ideas that they just cant cook or that cooking is too time consuming or that healthy food tastes like dirt (as if McDonalds is gourmet food!)

That said, Im not going to nag you, scold you or try to scare you out of eating fast food. Im not going to lecture you about health food (not today, anyway). Nor am I going to bad-mouth the fast food restaurants.Im going to lead the new charge by showing you just how easy and convenient it is to eat healthy and nutritious food and make it delicous.

Heres a few meal ideas (for starters) to prove my point.

3-MINUTE APPLE CINNAMON OATMEAL* natural oatmeal (like Quaker old fashioned rolled oats)* natural (unsweetened) applesauce* cinnamon* for protein, serve with scrambled eggs or egg whites on side or stir 1-2 scoops of vanilla protein powder into the oats

I eat this almost every morning. Its faster, easier and cheaper than going to the donut place or getting sausage, cheese, bacon breakfast muffins at the fast food joint! (you dont have to wait in line, either!)

10-MINUTE LAZY PERSONS CHINESE STIR FRY* Brown rice (I like basmati)* frozen oriental vegetables* chicken breast, grilled (try foreman grill)* braggs liquid aminos (or light/lo-sodium soy sauce)

This takes 30 minutes, however, if you get a rice cooker and make a giant batch, you can have your rice on standby for instant eats and this will take less than 10 minutes.

It doesnt get much easier than that. (I like those chinese veggies that come with the little mini-corn-on-the-cobs reminds me of that Tom Hanks Movie, BIG)

2-MINUTE BLACK BEANS AND SPICY SALSA* black beans (15 oz can)* Medium or hot salsa* 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil* 2 cloves garlic or chopped garlic to taste* salt and pepper to taste

This one takes you all of 2 minutes to make. No cooking required! And its good! Its vegetarian as listed above, but if youre a high-protein muscle-head like me, just add chicken breast or lean ground turkey.

Best part: this is all inexpensive food! Oats, rice, beans doesnt get much cheaper than that - buy your healthy staples in bulk and the cost per serving is probably less than mickey Ds! (yes, even the Value meals)

When we are young, we think we can eat anything. Actually, this could not be further away from the truth. The problem with unhealthy food eating habits is that it packs too much energy. If you fill a car with gas beyond its capacity, the gas simply overflows. In the case of humans however, the body stores the excess energy as fat. The more we eat, the more it stores. Since the human skin is elastic, as our internal 'store' fills up, the skin stretches and we become obese. The only way to utilize these massive quantities of stored energy is to use it for some physical activity i.e. exercises. This however, is easier said than done. Most ordinary non-athletic folks would find that impossible. Healthy eating habits are one that includes 30% vegetables, 25% fruit, 20% whole grains and pulses, 15% protein and 10% milk or milk products. As you can see, the bulk of your health food should come from vegetables and only 15% from meats.

How To Control Weight And Be Healthy With Healthy Food Habits - Health

If you develop some healthy food habits you will control weight and you will be healthy. These things go hand in hand. There is a lot more information now than when I decided to live the healthy lifestyle, but even then there were some disturbing facts emerging.

Even then there were some basics that appeared to be risks to long-term good health. These were high consumption of saturated fats, sugar and salt and low consumption of fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grains and lack of exercise. The information available also pointed to a lack of nutrients such as minerals and vitamins because our food was over-processed.

Here are some healthy eating habits I have formed over the years that have helped me control weight and to be healthy:

1. I eat a good breakfast. I wake up hungry and if I have exercised that morning I am looking to replace some energy and fuel-up for the day. If I have cereal it will be oats, wheat biscuits or natural, unsweetened muesli. I eat several pieces of fresh fruit and a handful of walnuts. I do like eggs and have them boiled or fried in olive oil. These days I have a small piece of lean meat two or three mornings a week. I have green tea with breakfast.

2. Mid-morning I have a cup of green tea as a pick-up and may have a plain cookie.

3. Lunch might sound very boring, but I will generally have a whole grain sandwich with healthy fillings - tuna, salad, lamb or beef with a piece of fruit to finish. I will often have a coffee with a work mate, without sugar and a touch of milk. Generally, that is the only coffee I have of a day.

4. Normally I do not eat in the afternoon, unless I feel my energy is running down. A cup of green tea usually fixes that. I will sometimes have a handful of nuts or a piece of dark chocolate to give me a lift.

5. Dinner has always been our main meal. I do not eat big meals, but I eat several servings of vegetables - not white potatoes. When I have pasta I usually have salmon, bolognaise or arabiata sauce and try to keep away from the cream sauces. Generally, my only drink of an evening is a glass of red wine with my meal. I do like dessert but limit the amount I have. If I really feel like something sweet I will have a small piece of dark chocolate - it is low GI and a good antioxidant. Which means I do not have to feel guilty.

I do not suggest this is the definitive eating plan as there are many variations you could make in the place of what I do. In fact, I vary it a lot more than this. But the point is, I have thought about the food I eat and I do have a plan that suits me and keeps me healthy. Develop some healthy food habits, put some thought into what you are putting into your body and it will reward you with good health, vitality and healthy weight control.

So how do you make healthy food choices, when you only have fifteen minutes to prepare your meals? Well, the first thing you should realize is that quite often, healthy choices do not necessarily equate to two hour meals. You can make healthy food choices that are as quick to prepare or pickup as the unhealthy ones.

For example, sub sandwiches are a healthier alternative than pizza or burger and fries, but do not really take any longer to pickup. Salads can be prepared in just a few short minutes, and provide for the necessary vegetable daily requirement. Don' care for the usual salad? Make a Waldorf or fruit salad, either way you've changed it up a bit, and still provided a health choice. As for the dressing, oil based or vinegar based dressings are much better for you than the cream based, and are really more tasteful. Okay, suppose salads aren't what your kids like. What about other prepared foods that are also healthy foods? A recent health scare made me begin researching eating more healthy meals. After years of eating meals that were not what I should have been eating I have now found that the healthier diet has shown me how tasty these meals are.

I have begun eating a wider variety of foods including vegetables, whole grains and fruits. I am now eating less sugary foods and am keeping portions to a more moderate size.

When shopping with my wife we have begun to read the nutrition facts on food labels to ensure that we are only buying healthy food.

Eating healthy foods is not difficult at all. We are now eating mainly Fruits and Vegetables, Whole Grains, Fat Free or Low Fat versions of dairy products,Nuts, Lean Red Meats, Skinless Chicken,Eggs, Beans and Fish several times a week.

Fruits and vegetables should be part of every meal and you should eat at least five servings a day. They are full of vitamins and minerals and are low in calories.

What stops you from eating five serves a day of this healthy food. Is it time for shopping, are they too expensive or do you just dislike fruit and vegetables?

Keep an eye out for canned or frozen fruit and vegetables. Eat fruit and vegetables that are in season - these are cheaper and more flavoursome.

Don't try to build up to five serves overnight if you haven't been eating these for some time. Gradually build up and let your body adjust to the inclusion of these in your daily diet.

Watch out when cooking your vegetables that you don't smother them with sauces or dressings that may contain high fat content.

Whole Grains provide long lasting and healthy carbohydrate energy. Avoid refined grains such as pasta, bread and breakfast cereals that are not whole grains.

I am now also limiting my intake of alcohol. Instead I am drinking more water than before.

Please be careful that you are drinking the correct amount of water and not overdoing it.
