My Doctor said to me: "You have to loose weight!" He is lean and trim so I asked, "How do you keep yourself so trim?" He said: "I skip breakfast, skip lunch and have a steak and a martini every night for dinner". It got me thinking.

My clothes did not fit. I could not wear my favorite shirts. I looked terrible in photographs. The worst thing was that I was in a slow but sure spiral of weight gain that amounted to about 80 pounds since my days in college. The choice was clear: either keep gaining weight or do something about it to reverse the trend.

I am a person with a slow metabolism and a big appetite. As a child I was heavy. In High School and College/Law School because of heavy exercise I was trim for about 15 years. After I gained weight, the only two diets that seemed to work were the Drinking Man's Diet and the Dr. Atkins diet. There were two problems with these diets. My Doctor said they were unhealthy and when I deviated from them, the weight just came back on plus more weight like a cherry on the top of a chocolate Sunday.

I found a way to eat as much as I want, not be hungry, loose weight, gain muscle that I call The Gregg Diet. The plan is very simple. Here are the seven rules:

1) Skip one meal per day. 2) Eat as little fat as possible3) Exercise for at least 45 minutes per day4) No alcohol allowed5) Do not cheat on the above four rules more than one day per week6) Weight yourself every day at approximately the same time of day7) Stick to it on a permanent basis

In the Gregg Diet you do not count calories. Eat as many vegetables and as much fish as you wish, plus some fruit like bananas, peaches, blueberries, etc. Drink as much water and sugar free liquids as you can. Here are some of the tricks I have learned plus my secret rub.

The rub makes all fish taste better. You can fry it in canola oil, or broil it after you put a little olive oil on the fish then the rub. Plus you can put half a teaspoon in a cup of chicken or vegetable broth, put this in the microwave for 3 minutes and it fills you up like a real meal.

The Rub Recipe: (amounts are approximate and subject to your own tastes)

5% garlic salt5% smoked salt5% cumin seed5% fennel seed10% paprika15% hot pepper flakes55% chili powder- mix several varieties to make it interesting

Salad trick: for the dressing use no oil, balsamic vinegar and add a can of anchovies if you like them.

Snack trick: eat shredded mini-wheat cereal with extra artificial sweetener and add some cinnamon and/or clove powder on the top. No milk.

Ahi Tuna trick: cover with rub and fry in smoking hot canola oil for one minute per side per inch thick (i.e. two minutes per side if fish is two inches thick). Remove from heat immediately.

Drink trick: Diet Snapple with extra artificial sweetener

My doctor could not believe it. After the nurse weighted me, he took me back to the scale to verify the weight loss. The best part is I am continuing to loose weight, my blood pressure is down and the statistics on my cholesterol are the best ever.

In years past I have not always had the best nutritional habits. I was on the road a lot traveling for work and more than once I ate a couple of king-sized candy bars from the gas station instead of planning out a meal or taking some time to find a healthier alternative.

Now that I am older and wiser (older anyway, I am still working on the wiser bit) I am trying to make better nutritional choices. I am opting for healthy food snacks instead of the sugary quick fixes.

This transition is not easy. I have found that like a lot of people I am addicted to sugar. There I said it I am a sugar addict. If you have ever tried to wean yourself away from using or consuming sugar I am sure you have found it difficult. It is hard to quit cold turkey.

I read somewhere that when your body is craving those sugary sweets that what you are really craving is natural sugar. Natural sugar can be found in natural foods such as fruits.

Fruits are my secret weapon to combat my sweet tooth. I must admit that an orange or banana isn't quite the same thing as a peanut butter cup and although it is not as sweet it does help curb the sugar craving.

As time goes by and you have stopped eating refined sugar, food sources containing natural sugars will seem sweeter to you than they did before. Once you have reached this point I would try to add a whole grain snack bar to your healthy food snack arsenal. Be careful though make sure you read the ingredients. These whole grain bars will not spike your sugar levels and won't leave you tired one hour later like sugar sweets do. They are also a good source of protein and fiber. I mean, we even have the audacity to call it a 'new year's resolution' as if giving it this label will make it easier to do. It doesn't matter what you call it and you don't have to wait until New Year to give it a fancy name so as to excuse yourself from doing it earlier in the year. I know it's difficult when you're used to eating junk food. The problem is, junk food tastes so much better than healthy food and if we're being totally honest, healthy food can get a little boring after a while. Why eat leaves when you can have a chocolate covered fresh cream bun? Even sounds better doesn't it? Of course it does. You can make your healthy food interesting and tasty at the same time. There are many recipes out there to help you achieve that. Putting on weight is easy. Getting it off is hard but it's whe re you have to have patience. Acne is the eruption of lesions on various parts of your body. You could have acne on your face, on your chest, on your back, on your neck, on your shoulders, and even on the upper part of your arms. These acne lesions might appear as blackheads, whiteheads, nodules or cysts. Most people get acne in their teen years. Some get it in their forties. Acne isn't going to threaten your life, of course, but it could seriously interfere with it, especially if it disfigures you for the rest of your life. The onset of puberty brings hormonal changes to our bodies and these changes can cause acne. Oil glands, called sebaceous glands because they secrete sebum (oil) are now working more than they were during your childhood before puberty. Androgens, male hormones, are the primary culprit for this abundant secretion. Girls and women have androgens, though they don't have as many as boys and men.

A hair follicle starts the acne ball rolling. This sebaceous follicle, inside the sebaceous gland, is where acne happens. Puberty gets skin lining cells shedding more than in childhood but when they stick together as they sometimes do the extra oil results in a clogged pore. The oil builds up in this pore but can't get out. The follicle swells up and you have a lesion.

P.acne, a bacterium present in your skin starts to multiply to excess because of the clogging in the follicle. Your skin is now irritated and probably inflamed. Should the follicle burst at this point the skin around the follicle is going to react too. You are now going to have nodules, blackheads and/or pimples elsewhere on your skin. You now have acne lesions.

There are myths about acne that have been around for a long time that give you false information about acne. Let's dispel those myths right now. One of the more common of the false ideas you could have about acne is that if your hygiene is poor you're going to get acne. While you may very well get acne that poor hygiene is not the cause. Believing that could make your acne ever so much worse as you harshly scrub your poor face into irritation. Of course you don't want excess oil and dirt from the day's ventures sitting on your face, but when you wash it away be gentle. Only wash your face twice each day, and do so gently. Drying should be patting gently instead of vigorously. If you still have acne try something at the pharmacy that says it treats acne or see a dermatologist.

Stress doesn't affect or cause acne. This is a myth and it's not true. The stress you encounter throughout the day isn't going to bring on acne. Even were you to have stress beyond normal levels and take medication prescribed by your doctor that level of stress still isn't going to cause acne. The medication might, however, and if it does, tell your physician.

Let's also dispel the myth that the food that you consume affects your acne. Nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, do get a healthy balanced diet but don't think it's going to clear up your acne or prevent it from occurring. It won't.

A hair follicle starts the acne ball rolling. This sebaceous follicle, inside the sebaceous gland, is where acne happens. Puberty gets skin lining cells shedding more than in childhood but when they stick together as they sometimes do the extra oil results in a clogged pore. The oil builds up in this pore but can't get out. The follicle swells up and you have a lesion.

P.acne, a bacterium present in your skin starts to multiply to excess because of the clogging in the follicle. Your skin is now irritated and probably inflamed. Should the follicle burst at this point the skin around the follicle is going to react too. You are now going to have nodules, blackheads and/or pimples elsewhere on your skin. You now have acne lesions.

There are myths about acne that have been around for a long time that give you false information about acne. Let's dispel those myths right now. One of the more common of the false ideas you could have about acne is that if your hygiene is poor you're going to get acne. While you may very well get acne that poor hygiene is not the cause. Believing that could make your acne ever so much worse as you harshly scrub your poor face into irritation.
